  • 6th largest city 

  • Population of 470,000

  • Before the 18th century, Gdansk was the largest city in Poland

  • Gdansk is part of a conurbation called the 'Tricity' including Gdynia and Sopot

  • The Solidarity movement started in Gdansk, in 1980

  • It is said the first ruler of Poland, Miesko I, found Gdansk during the 10th century

  • The centre of Gdansk has Dutch renaissance architecture written all over it, due to the close ties Poland had with the Netherlands, making Gdansk a modern but charming city

  • Medical University of Gdansk (MUG) is ranked as the number 1 medical school in Poland 

  • 15% of MUG students are international students 

  • MUG educates more than 6000 undergraduates under 4 faculties; Health sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy and Biotechnology

  • MUG has been teaching the medical programme in English since 2002

  • MUG’s origin is said to be related to the centuries old medical practice of surgeons, since 1454

    • In 1558 the ‘Gdanski Gimnazjum Akademickie’ (GGA) was established and managed by eminent medical professions; Most famous lecturer- Joachim Oelhafius- in 1613, performed the first public autopsy of a new-born in Northern Europe. Jan Adam Kulmus, published his very famous anatomy atlas ‘Tabulae Anatomicae’ in 1932

      • The GGA closed in the early 19th century and MUB opened in 1945

  • The Invasive medicine centre (IMC) being MUG's main hospital is one of the most modern hospitals in Europe and with MUG's Non-invasive Medicine Centre (NIMC), bot hospitals are one of the largest hospital complexes in Poland.

  • MUG is ranked 2nd in Poland for Effective research and publications 

  • The academic staff teach according to the highest international medical standards

  • MUG is equipped with a state of the art Medical Simulation centre; 21 simulation rooms and a well equipped sports centre

Who is Qualified?

How to apply?

  1. Register and make an account on MUG’s online registration system

  2. Follow the instructions and submit the application via the online registration system

  3. Involves scanning documents onto the online registration system 

  4. APPLICATION NOT SUBMITTED WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED

  5. Once the online application is submitted, you will be notified through the University's online account or your email address, regarding the status of the application (make sure you always checking) 

  6. When the MUG admission committee verifies your documents, you will receive an invitation to do a written exam (Online due to COVID)

  7. After passing the written exam, you will be invited to an interview.

  8. At the end of the interview you will be told one of the following:

  9. You are accepted into MUG (verbal confirmation)

  10. You can redo the exam

  11. You have failed and have to re-apply next. year.

How are Applicants assessed?

Candidates are admitted based on their given ranking on the ranking list of candidates. The respective ranking given to the candidate is based on the total points achieved in the: 

  1. Number of points calculated from the official high school transcript/maturity certificate. 2 out of the 4 following subjects, Biology (Obligatory), Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics, are taken into evaluation and are graded by the internal evaluation system

  • Max. number of points is 60- Maximum 30 points for each of the 2 courses compulsory in the qualification procedure

  1. Number of points achieved in the obligatory entrance examination 

  • Max. number of points is 60- Maximum 30 points for each of the 2 courses compulsory in the qualification procedure

  1. Number of points achieved on candidate's performance from the Interview

  • Max. number of points is 10

Candidates with IB Diploma are admitted based on their scores from IB Diploma in Biology (obligatory) and one other subject; Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics + score from interview.

Entrance Examination

  • There is BOTH a Written Entrance Exam and an Interview/Oral exam

Orientation Week

  • An obligatory first week, held for 1st year students from 24/09/2020 to 30/09/2020, prior to the start of the academic year.

  • Number of activites/events are organised to integrate and introduce the new students into Uni life.

TIP: Make sure you carry your student ID when travelling on public transport & trains, to avoid fines of 150-300 PLN from ticket inspectors!

Jakdojade is a public transport app that everyone uses to travel via public transport in Poland. You put in your current location and your destination and it will show you what buses/trams to take. This app can be used in all Polish cities, as there is a feature where you can change the city you are in.

  • There is a canteen in the Student campus offering meals with student friendly prices.

  • Students have to cook or order food

    • Cooking your own food is much more cost effective than eating outside in restaurants. (Learning some basic cooking skills will be very useful)

  • Weekly grocery shopping costs varies for each individual depending on their diet, preferences and choice of grocery shop

  • Grocery shops:

    • Carefour

  • *The first 1-2 weeks of living, your shopping costs will most likely be the highest, as you would be buying the basic things like, washing powder, sponges, frozen food, canned foods and etc
