  • The Medical University of Silesia (SUM) is located in Katowice

    • The University opened on the 20th March 1949 as Akademia Lekarska (Medical Academy) and placed in Bytom

    • In the first decade of the University, 4 towns were considered for the main location Rokitinica, Zabrze, Bytom and Katowice

    • In 1957, the regional council officially declared that the University would be located in Katowice

    • The University received its current name in 1990

  • SUM is reportedly Poland's largest Medical University holding 10,250 students with a teaching staff of 1202 (295 are professors) across the 5 faculties.

  • The English division was established in 1996, after being qualified by the United States Department of Education

    • SUM has received accreditations from a​ll 50 states in the USA, most recently California

    • This University is popular  with American citizens or people planning to practice medicine in America because the medical teaching curriculum is comparable to medical programmes in the USA

  • Since 1949, MUS has produced over 50,000 healthcare specialities of which 25,00 being medical physicians.

  • Degree awarded: Master's degree (M.D.) [Lekarz]*

  • No. of English division students per year: 60-80 students 

  • Hospitals: medical centres comprising of Hospitals & Clinics 

  • Tuition cost: 26,000 PLN per semester  * 1 Year=  2 Semesters

  • Accreditations: SUM has received accreditations from all 50 states in the USA

  • Recognition: SUM is included in the 'World Directory of Medical Schools', therefore the Medical degree is awarded from SUM is  acceptable to:

  • Loans & Scholarships: Not available 

  • USMLE Training: No USMLE training provided by SUM, but USMLE exams can be arranged by the University  

  • Erasmus exchange: Is available

  • ECTS points (6 years): 360

  • 4-year MD course: Not available

  • Rotation: There is an opportunity to study in the USA during 5th and 6th year.

Information

  • Regarding admission/registration process, only contact:

  • Response time: It can take anywhere from a few days to 3 weeks to get a response, during the application process. TIP- Applying earlier the better

Who is Qualified?

Candidates that are eligible to study in higher education (University)

How to apply?

  1. Register and make an account on SUM’s Electronic application system 

    1. Follow the instructions and submit the application via the Electronic application system

  2. Involves attaching scanned documents to the application

  3. Pay the application fee of 85 PLN

  4. Once the application is submitted, you will be notified through the University's online account or your email address regarding the status of the application Make sure you are always checking

  5. After the successful verification of the online application, candidate is required to send/post the printed & signed application form with original or notarised copies of all required documents to the University's mailing address.

  6. NOTE: If Candidate does not send/post the required documents before the deadline (14 days prior to selected date of entrance exam), candidate will not be invited to an oral examination and hence their application will be withdrawn from the system.  

  7. Once the SUM admission committee verifies your documents, you will receive an invitation to an oral exam (entrance exam)

  8. On completion of the entrance exam, the candidate's number will be added to the ranking list (normally takes one day for the results to come out, but can get delayed and take a few days)

  9. On the list you will see the candidate's number with the mark next to it, if it says' Pass' then you have gotten accepted into MUS and CONGRATULATIONS!

How are Applicants assessed?

Candidates are admitted based on the results obtained from the entrance exam and hence will determine the candidate's position on the ranking list.

Where to buy tickets?

  • On the bus/tram:

    • small electronic tablet which accepts card payment (contactless & electronic ticket)

    • Bus dirver (cash only & paper tickets)

  • Small corner shops/Kiosk (paper tickets) 

  • Ticket machines at the bus/tram stop

 

Intercity travelling in Poland:

  • You can get 51% discount with your student ID (not if you are 26 and over)

  • Main train station is: Katowice

Taxi services:

TIP: Make sure you carry your student ID when travelling on public transport & trains, to avoid fines of 150-300 PLN from ticket inspectors!

  • There is no canteen service available

  • Students have to cook or order food

    • Cooking your own food is much more cost effective than eating outside in restaurants. (Learning some basic cooking skills will be very useful)

  • Weekly grocery shopping costs varies for each individual depending on their diet, preferences and choice of grocery shop

  • *The first 1-2 weeks of living, your shopping costs will most likely be the highest, as you would be buying the basic things like, washing powder, sponges, frozen food, canned foods and etc
